The" Real American" Requirement

"I request and require you recognize the Church as your Mistress and as governess of the world and universe, and the High Priest, called the Pope, in her name, and His Majesty, king of Spain, in Her place, as Ruler and Lord King.  And if  you do not do this, with the help of God I shall come mightily against you, and I shall make war on you everywhere and in every way that I can, and I shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and His Majesty, and I shall seize your women and children, and I shall make them slaves to sell and dispose of as His Majesty commands, and I shall do all the evil and damage to you that I am able.  And I insist that the deaths and destruction that result from this will be your fault."

The aforementioned paragraph is called "The Requirement," a sixteenth century statement that Spanish troops read to Native American villages before laying siege in the New World.  While this direct attack on people has long been deemed unacceptable, the indirect methods of warfare are alive and well.

Sarah Palin has talked about the rural areas of this country being the "real America." Michele Bachmann has encouraged the media to investigate whom in congress has pro or anti American views.  Rush Limbaugh claimed General Colin Powell endorsed Barrack Obama for president simply because he was Black.  Limbaugh also made some statement that Powell "owed" the Republicans for his career.

These phrases are all code words and indirect ways of saying something more sinister.  What conservatives are implying is if an individual does not agree with them, then they aren't "real Americans." To them, real Americans are white, rural and hardworking people.  It should be mentioned that stereotypically, those folks tend to vote Republican.

Which means in a way, that "The Requirement" statement is still valid.  Physical harm may not come to an individual whom disagrees with the so — called "Real Americans," but social consequences is a different story.  You may be labeled a traitor, terrorist, or unpatriotic.  Maybe employment or residence could be denied to you due to not being a "real - American."

Colin Powell has been throughout his career a conservative Republican, but the minute he acts independent of that thought, he's basically called an ungrateful Negro from Rush Limbaugh.  I don't know how Powell owes the Republicans anything, considering he worked his way up through military ranks.  Yet, again this proves my point about this "Requirement" to be a real American.  Even for man like Powell, the minute you act against the "Requirement," all the evil and damage "Real Americans" can inflict will be done.  And of course, the fault will lie with Powell and other unpatriotic Americans.

Mista Jaycee,
Thanks for the comment.

Judging from the recent election results, the "Southern strategy" or "Real American Requirement" is dead!

We are all Americans, sometimes embracing a nation that does not embrace us.

The U.S. is a contradictory territory; seizing the property of the indigenous; built upon the back of slave labor - yet Washington has always projected a self-righteous code of intervention towards the outside world.

Kofi Bofah,
I could not have said it any better myself!

With Barrack Obama's victory, it now forces me to rethink my view of America and how I believe she views me.
