I'm rooting for the new first lady!

Hello to everyone who still checks out my blog on a regular basis.  I've been a little busy lately, which is why the Truth has not written in a while.  I plan on being more consistent from now on.

Anyway, here's an interesting article about America's new first lady, Michelle Obama.  This article was written by an African American female writer (Allison Sammuels) who is considering the importance of America having a Black woman as first lady.  How she'll force America and more importantly, Black folk, to rethink how we view ourselves.

I've always liked Mrs. Obama, she is a beautiful, articulate woman.  But, I have not been surprised that over the last two years, people have taken shots at her.  Basically, because she is a Black woman.  The shots have not all come from Republicans, either. In Chris Rock's comedy special, "Kill the messenger," he quipped that a Black Woman could not be the first lady.  Something to the effect of black women being overbearing and controlling.  In a separate issue, D. L.  Hughley stated that black women "are upset by black men interracially dating, but Obama would not be here if not for an interracial couple."

As far as Mr. Rock's comments, I guess it depends on how sensitive you are to caricatures.  It's no doubt the joke reflects a long held stereotype of Black women.  Although, I'm sure Rock would say it's just a joke.  He probably would venture to say he does not really believe his own statement.  This is the same guy who encouraged Black women to interracially date if they have difficulty finding a Black man.  So, this "joke" is to up each individual to decide if it's funny or not.

D. L.  Hughley's comment was short sighted and a bit ignorant.  First off, every Black woman does not have an issue with interracial dating.  There are growing numbers of Black women who date and marry outside of their race, therefore, they all can't possibly have a problem with it.  My second point would be that all Black men do not embrace interracial dating either.  In fact, many ethnic groups in this country have their own hang ups when it comes to dating outside of their race.  It's not just a Black man or women issue.

With these comments indirectly attacking black women and the first lady, I imagine there will be more to come over the next four years.  The hate not only come from Republicans, but self hating Negroes or folks with unresolved Black women issues. Which is why I'll be rooting for our brilliant and beautiful first lady.  Lord willing, she'll prove them all wrong!

But it's interesting how those same "comedians" are gonna head towards D.C. next MLK weekend for the inauguration.

Brother Truth, you are living up to your name on this one.

I do think about how things would have been different if Obama married outside his race. But I'm sure Michelle is glad that she wasn't superficial in choosing a husband. Let the other airhead sistas take note.

Zack,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

The question you posed was interesting. In my opinion, had Obama's wife been white, he would not be president. I seriously doubt he would have won the democratic nomination. Black and White folk would not have voted for him like they did, if his wife was white. Especially within the Black community, he would not have received ninety percent of the vote.
