I could point out obvious motivations to why this former KGB analyst and current dean of the Russian Foreign ministry's academy for future diplomats has such dire predictions for America.
But, I'm not going talk about that, what's more intriguing to me is what if he's right? Mr. Panarin states that due to economic turmoil and moral decay, America will collapse and foreign powers will move in. He believes the United States will split along racial lines and a civil war will take place. Looking at his map of what foreign powers would control or influence certain parts of "The Divided States," I can't help but be a little worried.
What bothers me about this scenario is I know I'm not prepared to deal with a situation like this. Furthermore, I know the majority of Black folk would not be ready.
If wealthier states do secede from the union and the Federal government breaks down, one can only imagine the chaos that would in sue. It would be like Hurricane Katrina on steroids and we all saw who the majority of vulnerable people were in that disaster.
If things in this country were to breakdown, then communities would have to stick together. Many of my blogging brethren have commented about the self hate that exist within our communities. The recent study that showed an increase of young black men killing each other between 2000-2007 comes to mind and makes me even more anxious if a worst case scenario occurred.
Bottom line is most Americans would not be ready for a collapse, but some would be at more of a disadvantage than others. Black folk would probably be in the most vulnerable state and this mostly could be attributed to enemies within our communities. Many inner cities do not have businesses or the infrastructure to sustain its self for a long period of time. With the many broken families, exactly who would be policing our communities at night, provided no other state agency is around or would care to protect Black folk.
I hate to start off the year with doom and gloom, but I have to ask, how ready are you for the possibility of" The Divided States?"

Now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember certain characters in Texas talking about seceding from the union in the 80's.
I'm not all that concerned about the demise of America by 2010. It does seem a bit far fetched, but many things that have occurred in recent history have been surprising. If ten years ago you would have told me that terrorist would fly planes into the World Trade Center buildings, I probably would have laughed at you. Even with all the warning signs, I still wouldn't have thought it was possible to have an attack like that on American soil. But it did occur, so anything within reason, I don't dismiss as implausible. Unfortunately, with all the economic turmoil right now, I do think Mr. Panarin's theory is within reason. Unlikely? Yes, Impossible? No.
As far as SagaciousHillbilly comment, I don't think he was trying to be offensive. He just doesn't believe Mr. Panarin is credible, which is easy to understand why.

There are many issues I have with Mr. Panarin's theory, but I didn't want to explore them because that would not have been as interesting as playing with the possibility that he's right. But here a couple thoughts, Its kind of convenient that the data he used to make this prediction is "Classified." It would be nice if the public could examine his data.
The map itself seems kind of ridiculous, but then again, you never know! There is a beginning and ending to everything.

America is already divided..It's just not divied up by foreign powers. (Though considering so many Foreigners own traditionally Amrican Businesses, one might argue even that point.)America has been divided for some time.. George Bush's election taught us that. This is a very scary premise.
To answer your question, most Americans and especially us African-Americans would not be ready for such an event.
